A Michigan teen club got in hot water this week for staging a bikini contest for girls 16 and up. According to news reports:

The owner of a teen club called Primal got into trouble with South Lyon officials and parents because of a bikini contest. Chris Cortis opened Primal in January as a place to give teens a safe environment. Now, he’s accused of letting the teens go too far.

“I just wanted to keep them off the streets. … and from doing the stupid things that you do when you’re a kid,” said Cortis.

The club is open for patrons between the ages of 14 and 19. They are served energy drinks, but no alcohol. The controversy is over a bikini contest last weekend that was designed for girls age 16 and over. Cortis said the girls did have music. “I think they had a song during the contest. Were they dancing? Yes. Was it provacative dancing? No,” he explained.

Parents and city leaders said just the idea of a bikini contest was inappropriate. “It makes me think of Cancun and all those girls gone wild videos,” said parent, Bethany Kalina. “I just don’t think it sends a good image for the city.”…

The bikini contest was supposed to run for six weekends. Cortis has agreed to cancel the contest, but will continue to operate the club, which he says is needed.

What do you think? Should bikini contests be restricted to women 18 and up?
